Cable Pip Value and the Cost of the Spread

Because GBPUSD is dollar quoted, its pip value is identical to EURUSD at ten dollars per standard lot, so nothing new to memorize there. The difference that actually costs you money is the spread. Cable often trades a wider spread than EURUSD, and at ten dollars a pip a 1.5 pip spread is fifteen dollars round trip on a standard lot before the market moves at all.

That is why measuring in pips matters on cable. Use the pip distance mode to check the spread between the bid and ask and the distance to your stop, then multiply by the pip value to see the cost in money. Sizing down or waiting for a tighter spread can matter more here than on lower cost pairs.

quiz Frequently Asked Questions

Is GBPUSD pip value the same as EURUSD?expand_more
Yes. Both are quoted in US dollars, so one pip is $10 per standard lot, $1 per mini, and $0.10 per micro for a dollar account. The pairs differ in spread and volatility, not in pip value.
How much does the GBPUSD spread cost in dollars?expand_more
Multiply the spread in pips by the pip value. A 1.5 pip spread on a standard lot is $15, on a mini lot $1.50, and on a micro lot $0.15. Cable spreads are often a touch wider than EURUSD, so this cost adds up on frequent trades.
What is 1 pip on GBPUSD in pounds?expand_more
For a pound account the $10 pip is converted to sterling at the current rate, landing near 7.85 pounds per standard lot at typical prices. Set your account currency to GBP above to see the exact figure for your lot size.
